Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a huge fan of the Dragon Ball Z series. I followed all the sagas and the movies religiously, keeping myself up to date with the storyline and all the major developments. I remember I would always be fascinated by Goku and Vegeta’s rivalry and how Vegeta always wanted to surpass Goku but couldn’t.
You can’t imagine my surprise when Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was released on the PlayStation 4. I got the game as soon as I could to get a refresher on the story of Kakarot (Goku) and experience the events as Goku since he is the main playable protagonist.
After finishing the game, I thought of penning down my thoughts here, explaining why Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a great game.
Prerequisites of Playing Dragon Ball Z
Before we get into my findings, here is how you can play the game.
If you are looking to play the main game and all the DLCs in one place, then you should get the Deluxe Edition of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot. You can find it very easily on the PlayStation Store, but keep in mind that it is a heavy file and will require a superfast internet connection to be downloaded as quickly as possible. With my Xfinity Internet, I could download it in a jiff. So, you should look into Xfinity Internet plans to get a superfast Internet connection to optimize your overall gaming experience.
On this note, are you ready to explore what Dragon Ball Z holds for you?
More Than One Playable Character
One thing I love about Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is that it features more than one character that you can play with. These characters include Goku, Gohan (kid, teen, adult, and future), Vegeta, Piccolo, Future Trunks, Vegito, and Gotenks.
However, you can play other characters in the DLCs, including Pan, Bardock, and Tien. I had the most fun playing as the fusion characters Vegito and Gotenks. Another amazing thing about the game is that every character has a unique move-set and super abilities as well. While the game was centered on Goku, I enjoyed playing Vegeta.
All the Major Sagas
This game was released just when I thought I had forgotten most of the major plot points. It took me through all the sagas, catching me up to speed in no time. The game starts from the Saiyan Saga with the arrival of Vegeta and his henchmen, seeking to destroy Earth.
Then, there’s a Frieza Saga where we see Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta go Super Saiyan for the first time. All the fighters arrive on Planet Namek so that they can stop Frieza from wreaking havoc on the planet. Followed by the Frieza Saga, there’s the Cell Saga, which is dedicated to the Androids and they aim to destroy Earth and kill Goku.
Cell Saga was a bit demanding, but it is also the saga where Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2 for the first time, showing how strong he is as compared to Goku and Vegeta.
The last saga featured in the game is the Majin Buu Saga, after which the game ends (but you can play the DLCs to extend the story). The Majin Buu Saga is my favorite one as it shows Goku at his peak once he taps into becoming a Super Saiyan 3. Through this part, you get to fight Majin Buu, Super Buu, and Kid Buu, where Kid Buu is the strongest variant.
Additional Content
Aside from the main game, you can download DLCs for Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, which includes other sagas and more abilities that you can add to your characters. I found the DLCs to be pretty captivating and though some of them were short, they had their unique elements that made them fun.
The DLCs include A New Power Awakens Part I, which takes us to the Dragon Ball Z Super time. In this saga, Goku and Vegeta meet Beerus, the God of Destruction, and Beerus has them reach high levels so that they can fight him. This is also the time when Goku and Vegeta learn the Super Saiyan God transformation.
In A New Power Awakens Part II, Goku and Vegeta learn the Super Saiyan Blue transformation, which I believe is stronger than Super Saiyan God. They do so to fight against Golden Frieza, a new entity that is planning mass destruction.
Another DLC is Bardock: Alone Against Fate, which is about Bardock, Goku’s father, who is a Saiyan warrior. It also tells the backstory behind Frieza and King Cold’s (Frieza’s father) motives. Though I have yet to play this DLC, I am interested in seeing what happens.
There’s also the 23rd World Tournament DLC, which is after the initial events of Dragon Ball Z after Goku’s fight with Demon King Piccolo. In this DLC, reincarnate versions of the demon king seek revenge on Goku.
My favorite DLC out of all is the Trunks: Warrior of Hope DLC, which is set in future events where Goku has died due to the virus in his heart (for good this time, the Dragon Balls can’t bring him back). The fate of the world is up to Future Trunks and Future Gohan as they are the only remaining survivors after Android 17 and Android 18 destroyed everything.
The last major DLC in the series is Goku’s Next Journey in which he enters the next World Tournament to fight against his friends, but a mysterious yet super strong boy called Uub catches his attention. One thing that set this DLC apart is that it had additional characters you could play with, including Pan and Tien.
I believe I’ve provided you with all the great reasons to buy Dragon Ball Z. Just download the game and experience it all over again.
